Work & Family Mobility Act 2023

As of July 1, 2023, all residents of Massachusetts are allowed to apply for a driver's license, regardless of immigration status!

All Massachusetts residents may apply for their Learner’s Permit and take a road test to obtain a license. Alternatively, those with licenses from other states that are unexpired or expired less than one year ago may be able to transfer their license to Massachusetts without needing to retake the tests.

  1. The first step is to gather the necessary documentation. A checklist of necessary documents is available in English, SpanishPortuguese, and French. FAQ sheets are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Please review these materials before making your appointment.

  2. The second step is to make an appointment at the RMV. Once your documents are ready, you can schedule an appointment at: Mass.Gov/MyRMV
